چکیده

The purpose of the investigation was to establish how the pineal-adrenal axis plays an important role in thermoregulation in female goats under short-term heat stress. The study was conducted to observe the influence of glucocorticoids on pineal function in goats and its influence on stress alleviation capability. Melatonin and glucocorticoid secretions and several other endocrine and biochemical blood parameters reflecting the animals well being were determined over a one week period after goats had been exposed to 40°C and 60% relative humidity for 10 days. Six female goats were used in the study. These animals served as self controls prior to the start of the experiment. The study was conducted for a period of seventeen days in a psychrometric chamber at 40°C and 60% relative humidity. Chemical pinealectomy was achieved using propranolol followed by exogenous hydrocortisone treatment. Blood samples were drawn twice daily after each treatment to find the effect of hydrocortisone on plasma glucose, total protein, total cholesterol, cortisol, insulin, aldosterone, melatonin and corticosterone. Chemical pinealectomy significantly (p≤0.05) affected plasma levels of the parameters studied and these could be significantly (p≤0.05) counteracted by administration of hydrocortisone. Chemical pinealectomy aggravated thermal stress, although administration of hydrocortisone could ameliorate the condition. This indicated a role of the pineal in support of thermoregulation. The study establishes the modulating effect of glucocorticoids on pineal activity to relieve thermal stress in goats. (

Pineal-adrenal interactions: the effect of acute pharmacological blockade of nocturnal melatonin secretion.

The pineal gland is a complex neuroendocrine organ which is under photoneuroendocrine control. Previous studies in animals and humans have suggested reciprocal variations in pineal melatonin biosynthesis and adrenal glucocorticoid output; it remains unclear, however, whether a causal relationship exists between these two systems. To address this question, we examined the overnight secretory act...

Morphologic changes in the pineal parenchyma cells of rats exposed to continuous light or darkness.

ONSIDERABLE evidence exists which suggests an antigonadotrophic function for the mammalian pineal organ (1). Furthermore, Wurtman et al. (2), in confirming and extending the work of others, have shown that pinealectomy in the immature female rat produces premature vaginal opening and hypertrophy of the ovary, adrenal and pituitary, whereas chronic administration of an aqueous pineal extract cou...

The modulating effect of glucocorticoids and opioid system on anxiety related behavior in young and adult rats

One of the main components of the stress system is hypothalamus- pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Acute activation of µ-opioid receptors increases the activity of the HPA axis, leading to release of ACTH and corticosterone. Glucocorticoids can change behaviors, depend on age but there were no evidences about the interaction between age, opioid system and glucocorticoids. In this experiment, ...

The antisteroid action on the pineal gland.

The study presents the data gathered along the years on the antisteroid action of the pineal gland. Thus, it was demonstrated that administration of pineal polypeptides to the rabbit lowers the urinary 17-KS both of testicular and adrenal origin. Conversely, pinealectomy caused an increase in the level of these steroid hormones. The same pineal material induced a marked decrease both in the ser...
